- This is not a bad statement. I was probably being unfair in not conceding that before and only focusing on the negative. Not sure if it is too late to do anything about the photograph but even questions of taste should not be ignored. If the picture can be replaced I think it should be done for the reasons given. I also think that Left Unity needs to get into the habit of putting out statements that carry weight because they have behind them the authority of the leadership rather than just one individual. The reason the SSP proved so much more successful than any of the other left unity initiatives since Tony Blair destroyed Clause Four had something to do with the democratic debates that ended up with majority votes. And the reason Respect has always had a problem is because George Galloway was given free rein to do what he liked because his oratory and debating skills were deemed too much of an electoral asset to risk annoying him. Left Unity can only build by being coherent and united. This is how we capture seats. We need to demand democratic mechanisms that hold the leadership to account. If the entire Left Unity agrees with Kate’s statement, then they need to append their names to it. If not, they need to get together to issue some other agreed statement.
