I have been weighing up what, if anything, to say about the death of Peaches Geldof. I am still not sure how to intervene.
There is certainly an outpouring of grief on twitter that I can’t relate to. Paul Mason said on Channel Four News last night that she was a journalist in her own right, and not without talent. I can’t tell if there is any truth to that. I know next to nothing about her. If she had any talent it passed me by. I’m not saying it isn’t true, just that I knew nothing about it.
A very young woman with two young children who she clearly loved very dearly has died in mysterious circumstances. That is sad regardless of who this woman is. But even I know something about Peaches Geldof. I remember the tragic circumstances of her mother’s death. I know how that must have affected her. I have seen the photographs of her as a child, and this cycle seems to be repeating itself all over again…
It is always sad to be alerted to a personal tragedy like this. But is this real news? I’m not sure. While it is not impossible that there may indeed be a real news story here, it may be one that is being missed. Indeed, the real story might be the very last thing that the BBC, SKY News and Channel Four News want viewers to focus on.
My gut reaction is that the media obsession with Peaches Geldof’s death is incestuous, celebrity gossip columnists cannibalizing each other, masquerading themselves as investigative journalists.
What we are witnessing is Britain’s news channels looking for something, indeed just about anything, to fill up the schedules, providing them with any old excuse not to cover the real news. News is being diluted out of the news schedules. At least homeopaths leave us with safe, drinkable water. What Channel Four News and the BBC deliver is much more like hallucinogenic drugs.
In the dark heart of NATO’s war criminals – the good old United States of American – the mainstream broadcasters have gotten away with this for generations. The absence of any electorally popular socialist party, nor organized labour movement in the industrial arena has let the capitalist media off the hook. And they have gotten away with murder.
And since that corrupt war criminal, that yuppie entryist – Tony Blair – got away with shredding Clause Four months after becoming Labour leader, Britain’s broadcast media tycoons and their editors on a string have pushed things ever further rightwards into USA-style drivel.
The Labour Party’s leaders have just kept following the anti-socialist broadcasters down this apolitical ultra-right-wing blind alley.
It is possible that there is an actual news story behind the death of Peaches Geldof. We may be witnessing just one more instance of how celebrities have been gobbled up by a celebrity gossip hungry media.
Anyone else see that obnoxious Thatcherite scumbag Katie Hopkins put the boot into Peaches, with the help of Philip Schofield, on live television recently? We witnessed an emotionally vulnerable individual who has lived in the glare of publicity from the moment of her mother’s death, a death that may have helped push an eleven year old child beyond the edge by these celebrity ghouls.
Peaches Geldof is almost certainly just one more victim of a mass media that can’t be arsed giving the voters real news… And two more children are forced to pay the price. If that is true, these three people are only the tip of the iceberg. Why is this woman’s death so important for Britain’s news channels?
Peaches Geldof’s death is important for the BBC et al because she was not just any 25 year old mum. She is important to the BBC because she was a celebrity, a part of a celebrity dynasty, a woman who entered their media circus at a very young age, courtesy of a previous generation of media gossip bloodhounds, using cheque-book ‘journalism’ to dish the dirt on infidelity (in other words, consensual sex between adults), infidelity that stretched all the way back to Peaches Geldof’s grand-parents. Throw in illegal drugs and you’ve got yourself a story. Of course, it is a story that will get members of the working class sent to jail, while the celebrities never off the BBC etc have their illegal activities ignored: George Osborne, Nigela Lawson, etc., etc., etc..
Other 25 year old mums are looked on much less favorably by the BBC, by SKY News and by Channel Four News. The desperately needed benefits of the poorest are taken away by these Tory cheerleaders to provide tax cuts for David Cameron’s government of millionaires, by millionaires, for millionaires. And Tory broadcasters like Jo Coburn, Matt Frei and Jeremy Paxman lap it up. Nothing makes them happier than robbing from the poor to help the rich, including their bosses and, they hope, themselves.
There are no decent jobs for most 25 year old mums who lose their benefits. They are kicked out of their parents homes due to Iain Duncan Smith’s vile bedroom tax and other changes.
There are no trade union rights, nor any rights to fight unfair dismissal. There is no protection from all the additional cuts in social services demanded by these celebrity obsessed Tory broadcasters.
Peaches Geldof matters to Chris Patten and Rupert Murdoch’s goons because the elite matter to them. Most 25 year olds can die in the gutter as far as they are concerned. Working class children are driven to drugs, to selling their bodies for sex to get the money they need to pay the rent or to put food on the table of their children.
When it comes to news, politics and current affairs, with a few handfuls of exceptions these days, the broadcasters are Tories or Blairites. And if you can spot the difference between Tories and Blairites, you’re a better man (or woman) than I am.
Rupert Murdoch and Chris Patten need the Pistorius trial. They need missing airplanes. They need celebrity drug deaths. These Tories need that and, of course, sports and as much Royal bullshit as they can shove down our throats and into our ears.
These bastards need any excuse they can find to fill up their cringe-worthy ‘news’ schedule. They desperately need to stop the voters becoming informed about what is really going on in the world.
What is the BBC, SKY, Channel Four News doing to expose the criminality of today’s Bob Lambert type undercover cops? Their committing perjury alongside spin doctors working for senior politicians, their framing socialists after agent provocateur activity?
What is the BBC, SKY News and Channel Four News doing about informing the great British voters about all of NATO crimes and their fascist pals in Egypt and Ukraine, about the blacklisting by asset-stripping, union-busting bastards who buy and sell politicians? I’ll tell you what they’re doing. Not a damn thing.
Why don’t voters know what the BBC did to stop five ultra-rich families becoming so powerful that they now own more than the poorest 20% of society? Because they did nothing. They let this happen. And they promoted the Blairites to prominence who helped British society continue to polarize into such an obscenely unequal dystopia.
All of this is happening because Britain’s broadcasters are working overtime to keep voters in the dark. The personal tragedy that is the sad death of Peaches Geldof fills up the news channels because it provides them with one more excuse to distract the voters from what is really going on in British society. And about what they, the voters, might be able to do to change things for the better.
