Lib Dem Minister such as Norman Baker have posed in the past as ultra-suspicious of British Intelligence. Now, alas, they are justifying the lack of public scrutiny of emergency powers to protect these people who want to spy on their own potential whistle-blowers, lawyers for victims of child sex abuse at Kincora, for example, investigative journalists exposing the role of Special Branch and MI5 in the cover-up of a pedophile network for four decades and more, and possibly campaigning MPs, such as Tom Watson.
Norman Baker excuses the lack of public scrutiny of this authoritarian process on the basis of his Lib Dem colleagues in David Cameron’s government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich dragging their feet until the very last minute. And thanks to the incompetence (possibly very convenient ‘incompetence’) of these Lib Dem Ministers, there is now no time left for independent minded MPs to subject the legislation proposed to proper scrutiny by parliament, who are supposed to hold an increasingly out-of-control executive to account.
Surely this is the last nail in the coffin for these Liberal Democratic charlatans. Not only should no one waste their time casting a vote for them on the pretext they can’t possibly be as bad as the Tories; in the event of a hung parliament, no politician with a shred of decency should allow this shambles of a party anywhere near government. That, alas, does not seem to be the opinion of Ed Miliband or anyone on his front bench. And that is a tragedy for all decent Labour Party voters.
